We welcome questions. Some questions have been edited for clarity.

In view of the Old Testament laws, what can you say about eating “dinuguan” (stew with pig’s blood)? – Che (Singapore)

Old Testament (OT) food laws (a.k.a. kosher) were important to the Israelites then as a primitive nation under the political and social guidance of God. Food laws were part of his covenant with them. It’s important to understand, however, that there was a clear transition of covenants—Old to New (Jeremiah 31:31, Hebrews 7:11-12). God planned this transition; the Law of Moses and Old Covenant stipulations should be seen as God’s word to us but not law for us. That’s all elaborated in Hebrews 7 through 9.

There are guidelines for determining which of the OT regulations carry over to the NT. Roughly: Was it repeated in the New? Was it reiterated by Jesus? Was it commanded by Paul or the other apostles? But we cannot go into all that in detail.

One of the most important passages in the NT to show that all foods are clean is Mark 7:14-23, and especially verse 19. Jesus recognized no unclean food, and Paul concurs (Romans 14:20). Paul teaches that the Kingdom is not about simply food and drink (14:17-18).

At the same time, I would say that no one is to eat food he/she is not comfortable taking. We may have preferences and aversions to different kinds of foods or food preparations, but theologically, there is no issue. Jesus himself declares that whatever you ingest does not make you unclean. Please see my Powerpoint entitled “To Eat or Not to Eat” for more on this. Thanks.

THE GLORY OF GOD
The ULTIMATE END OF ALL LEARNING

by Paris Murray II

Why add to your learning?

Your worship can go no deeper than your understanding. After all, how can you praise what you do not know? By contrast, the more and more you learn about God, the more and more reasons you have to love and praise Him! This is the heart behind addtoyourlearning.com

Consider this pivotal declaration of Jesus:

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth... He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. John 16:13-14

As Jesus promised, the Spirit of Truth guided key first-century Christians to record the revelation of God. This extraordinary Spirit-led guidance is known as inspiration, and the resulting writings, the New Testament. Taken together with God’s previous revelation—the Old Testament—mankind was given and now has the complete revelation of God and therefore all truth.

Today, it is vital for Christians to remember that the Spirit continues to guide us into all truth. How? By empowering us to understand the Word of God. This modern-day role of the Spirit is known as illumination.

Why add to your learning?

Because if you desire to know God deeply, you must know God’s Word deeply. Along the way, something amazing takes place. The more you learn about the message of Christ, the more Christ is glorified; the more God is made known to you, the more glory He is given. That, perhaps, is the highest motivation for studying the Bible—for yourself or with a friend or family member. Adding to your learning should not be regarded as optional, but rather essential to the life of a faithful Christian. On behalf of the MMCC teaching ministry, happy learning and to God be the glory!
